For me the ipod mounted just fine too--until I tried to write to it.
It was readonly, it was a journaled HFS+, and the kernel doesn't want
to mess with that.  From my Googling it looks like I have to find an
OS X box and do:

  # diskutil disableJournal theIpodVolumeName

The ipod doesn't look read only, but writing doesn't work.  Can you
actually write something to your ipod?
