Alternative to LaTeX?

Yeah, I think that'd be an interesting project. Ofcourse, markdown is
not as powerful as LaTeX, so the utility would also have to add new
commands to markdown. For the work I do, I'd at least need LaTeX-like
citations, cross-references and footnotes.  Others would need more.
These would have to be extensions to markdown itself, so that I could
export my source to HTML using markdown or to PDF via LaTeX. But
you're right I could conceivably write such a thing

I have to admit that, unfortunately, I'm probably not going to. It's a
bit of a detour from the work I'm actually paid to. But then again, so
is this, so maybe one day...
