can't run admin commands after expert install

Hi,

I installed Ubuntu 5.10 on a i386 laptop (IBM ThinkPad X40) in expert
mode, always selecting default values except for the bootloader (I
didn't want any to be installed) and when asked if I wanted the packages
to be copied to my hard disk. After logging in for the first time I
noticed that I can't run any of the admin utilities, i.e. the programs
from "System -> Administration" which call `gksudo ...'.

After selecting e.g. "Users and Groups" and entering the password, the
mouse pointer turns into a wheel for some seconds, then turns back
into an arrow, but nothing happens. The same problem exists when run
manually:

$ gksudo users-admin
[password prompt]
$ echo $?
0

After reinstalling Ubuntu _not_ using expert mode (and forcing it _not_
to installe any bootloader...) this problem was gone, I could run the
admin tools without any problems...

Any hints what could be the problem whith expert-mode installations?

Regards, Jukka
