[OOZY] How to know if a program is available in the repository and its version

apt-cache search nameoftheprogram
or
apt-cache show exactnameoftheprogram

There's a way to show the installed version as well, surely. But I don't
know how. I just use aptitude from console, or synaptic in X for that.
