Thinkpad Dapper: control external monitor/project?

Hello,

I am new to Ubuntu and have loaded Dapper Beta2 on my Thinkpad 41, with 
astonishing success and few if any problems (I have had a marvelous 
experience), except for controlling my external, 21" monitor via my 
dock/port replicator (I haven't tried it yet on my projector at the office, 
but I suspect I will have similar problems there).

I *do* get display on the external monitor (or I did when I first installed 
the OS--that's where I started from during installation), but the I get a 
800x600-ish view when I want to instead display 1280x1024.

I also want to switch between the different external-output modes (for the 
projectors works better at a different resolution then the external 
monitor), and all of the references to the xorg.conf settings (or whatever 
I'm supposed to set) do not seem to mention how I switch *between* the 
different display/layout/monitor settings.  Could I somehow map my Fn-F7 
key (the same one that Windows pays attention to to switch display 
settings) to a "switch display mode" feature?  Or any button/command, for 
that matter?

What follows is my short list of discussion reading that I plan to do on 
this (some of which I have already read and posted to).  Thanks in advance
