speech problem in ubuntu

Someone at my LUG burned the Dapper Beta for me and helped me install Ubuntu 
along with Gnopernicus.
However my laptop wasn't shut down properly at the end of the meeting and 
when I tried to get it out of sleep mode, I may have pressed a few keys, 
causing the loss of speech driver so when I logged into Ubuntu, instead of 
getting speech, I had Gnopernicus running but no speech at all.
Dad tried to re-install the whole thing for me but I think we chose the 
wrong options as Ubuntu did install but we had the same problem I think 
because we didn't get the menu up for choosing to install the accessability 
options and choosing Blind user or whatever for installing Gnopernicus or 
the speech driver it needs.
I presume that there isn't a talking installation and that I am going to 
have to guide a Sighted person as to how to do it but it isn't easy as my 
dad and most of the people I know apart from the people at my LUG don't know 
about Linux, dad is the type of person who I feel always wants to do short 
cuts as he works with computers half the time so can't always be bothered 
with them and I live on my own half the time.
If I knew that I could get a spoken installation I would probably have it 
done in whatever time it takes, assuming I could also get Gnopernicus 
running so I could set speech in preferences before restarting and then 
having it speak once I had entered my username and password.
Thing is if I hadn't messed up after not knowing my laptop had been left in 
sleep mode instead of logged out or had just switched the thing off by 
holding the start button for a few seconds I might not have run into this 
problem.
Perhaps someone could advise me if I paste the information below that was 
written about accessability in the Beta notes.
I wrote to the Gnome accessability list but so far nobody has got back to me 
on this.
New Installation Menu
When you first boot from the installation CD you are greeted with a friendly 
shiny
new installation menu that provides you with a very simple means of choosing 
how
to start installing Ubuntu. This new installation menu is powered by a very 
flexible
tool called gfxboot. This new gfxboot powered installation menu allows 
Ubuntu to
now provide, among other things, accessibility features right from the start 
which
allows anyone to perform an installation of Ubuntu 6.06.

Simply using the UP and DOWN arrow keys allows you to select the type of 
installation
you would like to perform. Use the Function (F1-6) keys to select additional 
options.
