speech problem in ubuntu

Someone at my LUG burned the Dapper Beta for me and helped me install Ubuntu
along with Gnopernicus.
However my laptop wasn't shut down properly at the end of the meeting and
when I tried to get it out of sleep mode, I may have pressed a few keys,
causing the loss of speech driver so when I logged into Ubuntu, instead of
getting speech, I had Gnopernicus running but no speech at all.
Dad tried to re-install the whole thing for me but I think we chose the
wrong options as Ubuntu did install but we had the same problem I think
because we didn't get the menu up for choosing to install the accessability
options and choosing Blind user or whatever for installing Gnopernicus or
the speech driver it needs.
I presume that there isn't a talking installation and that I am going to
have to guide a Sighted person as to how to do it but it isn't easy as my
dad and most of the people I know apart from the people at my LUG don't know
about Linux, dad is the type of person who I feel always wants to do short
cuts as he works with computers half the time so can't always be bothered
with them and I live on my own half the time.
If I knew that I could get a spoken installation I would probably have it
done in whatever time it takes, assuming I could also get Gnopernicus
running so I could set speech in preferences before restarting and then
having it speak once I had entered my username and password.
Thing is if I hadn't messed up after not knowing my laptop had been left in
sleep mode instead of logged out or had just switched the thing off by
holding the start button for a few seconds I might not have run into this
problem.
Perhaps someone could advise me if I paste the information below that was
written about accessability in the Beta notes.
I wrote to the Gnome accessability list but so far nobody has got back to me
on this.
New Installation Menu
When you first boot from the installation CD you are greeted with a friendly
shiny
new installation menu that provides you with a very simple means of choosing
how
to start installing Ubuntu. This new installation menu is powered by a very
flexible
tool called gfxboot. This new gfxboot powered installation menu allows
Ubuntu to
now provide, among other things, accessibility features right from the start
which
allows anyone to perform an installation of Ubuntu 6.06.

Simply using the UP and DOWN arrow keys allows you to select the type of
installation
you would like to perform. Use the Function (F1-6) keys to select additional
options.
