Java on ubuntu

Though it may not be the official process, I usually download tools from
their source rather than installing them from Ubuntu packages.
I've done this for Java, Firefox, Thunderbird, Plone, Zope, Python,
Apache HTTP, and Tomcat, among others. It's a bit more work, but I have
more control over the installation.
I must comment, though, that I have lots of experience working with the
same tools in Windows. I prefer to install UNIX-only packages like
"libs" from the distro or the GUI rather than searching for the packages
online. Good package installers handle the dependencies for you.
I have just spent a frustrating day working with "rpm" on ES 3. The
GNOME GUI for it is pretty decent, but the command line is very
difficult to work with. I haven't tried apt from the command line in
Ubuntu. The real problem is forcing either rpm or apt in command-line
mode to automatically download/install dependencies.
