PCI hardware modem

I have an older desktop with a US Robotics 2977 PCI Hardware FAX Modem.
(to the best of my knowledge, this is a real hardware modem, and not a
"winmodem").

Ubuntu 5.10 live CD failed to recognize the modem. Before I spend a lot
of time in attempts to get this modem to work with Ubuntu, I'd appreciate
if someone faced with the same might care to report his or her results.
