Yes, you should just be able to do an essid any when doing this.

Keep in mind that you need to kill dhclient before running this script.
I wrote a more complex script in ruby a year or two ago that acted in a
similar way to network-manager (automatic connection to any open network
or configured WEP enc'd networks), but it didn't kill dhclient, and my
system ended up running about 60 instances and causing some concern with
the sysadmins at my university.

I think the script is still on the web somewhere, but don't quite
remember where it is.
