Florian and Michael, good evening,
Jung once said that we only need what we know, what we see, what we believe in. In fact, this pretty much applies that Audi A4 4.2 FSI, Scarlett Johansson and, you guessed it, the touch-and-feel on your operating system. But don't think this is a clean fight: it's not. Once you're into MS's modus operandi, once you're acquainted to it, it's pretty much certain that you'll start feeling comfortable using it, it's applications and it's way of functioning. Same thing goes to MacOS, Linux, Solaris or whatever flavor or OS you wish. Starting from this principle, any time of migration requires some time of experimenting and, nevertheless, the starting need to do the exact same things you used to do in the exact same way, which, as many of you might felt, takes time (kinda like moving into Prolog after coding C since your childhood).
What you can't say, Florian, is that one OS has no disadvantage over the other, either you compare *nix to windows, solaris to *bsd or whatever you like. You see, GIMP really sucks, but that's because you might be used to Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. Linux is not an operating system built to excel in Graphic Treatment, so, it's kinda acceptable that we don't have the top-of-the-charts Photo Manipulation program. But that's OK. For example, Linux is moving at giant steps at becoming an acceptable workstation operating system, *but*, for example, how will I talk with my girlfriend who's 4000 km away and doesn't know the concept of skype, only MSN Voice Communication? (You could say "Teach her", but that's just not the point, and you know it.). On the other hand, try implementing a truly acceptable multiuser authorizing server over MS's products. Get my point?
As I was saying last night to Michael, one should use what makes him comfortable. Just like underwear. ;)
