Just kidding. In short:

downloading anything yourself.  ***

You use Synaptic Package Manager that you find in System ->
Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager.  This takes care of
everything with a minimum of pain, fuss or effort.

It will tell you the installed version, and the latest version. Then you
can tell it to update it. 

Note that if you're not using the new Dapper release yet that you also
get the latest Firefox (as well as the latest everything) by doing a
full version upgrade.
