Chances are Ubuntu won't work with your modem. It basically only works
with old style modems that you plug into a serial port.
These days most computers & laptops come with 'Winmodems' ('softmodems')
where all the modem functions are actually in the software driver, which
the manufacturer only makes for Windows...
It's a terrible problem. You could Google for 'Linuxant' but you will
find that they sell their Linux drivers for very real money; more money
in fact than the whole winmodem itself costs!
On my home desktop PC I just connect to an external modem via the Serial
port.. It detects this one automatically.
My laptop however does not have a serial port.. The only way I can
connect with that one at home is to boot my desktop PC into windows and
then use connection sharing and then connect through the LAN..
Consider getting broadband. :-/
