thanks, I tried apt-get ... mozilla-thunderbird (before posting),
but the result was:

Reading package lists... Done
Bulding dependency tree... Done
(but then:)
Package mozilla-thunderbird is not available... (etc,etc).

however, dpkg -i ... did the trick.
