dapper doesn't seem to run xscreensaver

Mine does have both, but xscreensaver isn't working right.

After writing last night, I did pass the computer with some
screensaver running on it; it wasn't on of the xscreensaver screens I
recognize.  But it certainly isn't in general happening after 10
minutes.  

I'll try removing xscreensaver and restarting (what should I restart?)
to see if that's the problem later.
