Clear the computer's memory?

FWIW, when i had Firefox, Thunderbird and Gaim open i could use 512mb of
ram, and almost a gig of swap in under 7 days, then even closing all 3
wouldnt restore all my memory - they can be a bit memory hungry im afraid.
Just one of the things you have to put up with i suppose
