To make sure it works.
I have been intending to replace my basement server with a (mostly)
new box and have been playing with Dapper. The old machine works. I
don't want to pull it until the new one convinces me it is working.
So far I have had problem with networking going away after a day or
two of running. I think it has happened twice in a couple weeks. I
don't know if it is a hardware problem or software, so I have been
applying the updates, and watching it.
So much for why, a comment on how: Let it run. Use each distinct
piece of hardware. Running compiles will certainly excercise most of
the box. Maybe run a ton of data into and out of your network card
to/from another box. Personally, mostly have it sitting there in the
kitchen running, and I use it when I have occasion to use it. I won't
swap it in as a server until I also have my new configuration set up.
(Do I want to run Xen and LVM, for example?)
