on both platforms, please use

  apt-get install j2sdk1.4

after adding the multiverse section to your list of sources.

.....Thank you Matthias...edited the sources.list file and then used "adept" to get & install  successfully jre....

 ...these new distributions are a bit of a mystery to me...I'm use to retrieving & compiling from source....

 If you would, can you explain why the  files from Sun & tux.org wouldn't install ???????
