I can't say it's the same as your problem, but I was hearing a lot of junk
out of my speakers during system events, and when I checked I discovered
that my system was using OSS (actually, KDE's "Automatic" settings) rather
than ALSA.  When I manually set it to ALSA, everything cleaned up.
