suspend and/or hibernate

Is there any way I can get suspend/hibernate to work
on my HP Pavilion dv4000 laptop.

I just upgraded to Dapper and it doesn't matter if I
select suspend or hibernate it just seems to sit there
trying to access the HD and it looks like it's also
trying to access the CD, but nothing happens, at least
not during the several mins that I've waited.
