Ubuntu resolution not able to change

I've got a system w/o a monitor I'm VNCing in to.
The resolution change front end that comes with ubuntu only allows the
option of 640x480.
Edited xconf, default depth is 24, and in that section I left only
"1024x768" as the option.
Rebooted, still 640x480.
Ideas? How do I force X to do 1024x768?
