Strange:

murrayc at ubuntumurrayc:/usr/src$ apt-cache show linux-image-686-smp
Package: linux-image-686-smp
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: base
Installed-Size: 48
Maintainer: Ubuntu Kernel Team <kernel-team at lists.ubuntu.com>
Architecture: i386
Source: linux-meta
Version: 2.6.12.16.1
Depends: linux-image-2.6.12-10-686-smp
Description: Linux kernel image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/PIV SMP.
This package will always depend on the latest kernel image available
for Pentium Pro/Celeron/Pentium II/Pentium III/Pentium IV with SMP
support.
SMP (symmetric multi-processing) is needed if you have multiple
processors.

I am using the http://archive.ubuntu.com mirrors (I think they were
us.archive or something similar once, but they were out of date a few
months ago). My sources.list is attached in case anyone can see a
problem with it.
