Whay can't I get more than 1024x768 resolutin in X

Check VertRefresh, HorizSync in your xorg.conf(/etc/X11/xorg.conf) 
Monitor section. Or, just delete that two line in Monitor section. DDC 
module seems to work very well. Maybe autodetecting occur.

Also, Screen section can be check. Note that line start with 'Modes' 
followed by screen resolution in order. I guess that line must have 
1600x1200 or your prefer. If you not sure, You can just delete that line 
in each depth so that use autodetection.
