Dapper post installation problem

The only thing I have needed to do in kubuntu Breezy & Dapper is:
'vga=0x317' or 'vga=0x323' depending upon what color depth you wish to have.  
The latter gives me true color in FB mode.  W/o it, I get a 640x480 screen on 
the VTs but the desktop still seems to go to full screen.  My last distro 
(Gentoo) required many more parameters so this one was easy. ;-)  Mind you, 
the is just a SWAG that I'm giving you.  I presume you have already checked 
the system logs for other clues.
