The way you describe your problem... I am wondering if you are attempting to 
use frame buffering on a notebook.  If so, you may want to check the 
parameters you hand the kernel.  I've never had a lockup as you describe, I 
don't think, but I've had plenty of probs getting the parameters set so that 
fb works as intended.
