Xine won't play xvid avi files on new machine

Ubuntu Users,

I have upgraded my computer, and I am trying to copy all the settings 
from my previous Ubuntu computer to the new one.

One stumbling block is that while Xine played all avi files on my old 
machine, it will not play avi files with the xvid codec on my new 
machine. Nor do I get the snazzy thumbnail icons.

I've made sure to get the Cipherfunk multemedia repository, and I 
installed the w32codecs.

VLC player can play the files, which only deepens the mystery for me. 
Why can VLC player handle the avi files that Xine can't. Totem also 
balks at xvid encoded files.

Any help would be much appreciated.
