altering the order of sound cards

hi,

same issue...
audigy 2 zs pcmcia card in an asus a2 notebook. running kubuntu.

kmixer picks up the pcmcia card, but i can't get it to play sound, and
it seems that the onboard card (fried) is still considered primary.

since the onboard card does not show up in bios, i can't disable it
there.

i have tried to alter some alsa configuration files, but cannot do so
via gui because of permission issues.
as a beginner, i don't know how to do this from cli.

any ideas as to how i can work around this?
