Well, I followed your advice and was still in square one!  I'm sorry to disappoint you guys of the Ubuntu community; I have had to ultimately erase Kubuntu from my harddisk.  There was so much hassle in configuring what should have been programmed for the user the simple task of dialing and connecting to the Internet, using among other things, a Linux compatible serial external modem.

I've installed Mandrive on my laptop instead; and, am now using Firefox to post this reply.

Perhaps I'll come back to Kubuntu when you shall have resolved my other would-be fellow users issues, among them, that which I have encountered.
