The U20 is UltraSPARC based, yes.

I've had a Dapper build installed on an Ultra 5 successfully, although
it was too slow for day to day use even with 512MB RAM.

You can get the Dapper builds from:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/daily/current/

May be worth trying that.
