festival is the engine you'll need for ksayit and other speech
programs.  I don't know which ones work for just gnome, since I use
kde.  Speech is integrated in kde, so you can have it say alarms, read
web pages, or whatever you want.  But, festival or festival lite are
needed to do the conversions.
