Creating PDF with gnome-cups-manager doesn't work

Here's an English version of Gerhard's (ggrubbish at web.de) question,
originally in German. Respond in English if you can, I'm sure he'll
figure it out :-)
Hullo.
I can only print PDFs via kprinter. Does anyone know how to integrate
that in Gnome into mozilla, firefox, opera, openoffice etc?
And if anyone knows how to drive gnome-cups-manager, I'd be grateful.
I'm using gs-apfl 8.14 from breezy.
I've selected the following printer: postscript color printer (rev3) -
which I believe is PostScript version 3.
Manufacturer: Generic
Driver: postscript color printer (rev3) Standard (Recommended)
Connection: local printer - PDF Printer
Another printer (Virtual Printer (PDF Printer)) doesn't work either.
I don't believe I can even print PostScript to a file with this, that I
could then convert with ps2pdf13.
Everything works fine with other KDE programs that use kprinter
(although gs-esp 7.07 often throws up PostScript errors like /rangecheck
etc). gs-apfl doesn't crash as often, but I'd prefer 8.53 - backports?
sudo tail -n40 /var/log/cups/error_log doesn't show anything related to
the gnome-CUPS-manager errors.
There's a red exclamation mark in the traybar beside the printer.
gnome-CUPS-manager shows "interrupted". If I double click on the printer
symbol, gnome-CUPS-manager crashes.
I permitted local browser access to the adminsitartion area of CUPS
using "sudo adduser cupsys shadow", but there's nothing settable there.
Can anyone help?
