VR Mode (not another DVD format?)

My wife and I bought a DVD recorder when our DVD player died last time.
It wasn't that much more expensive and we thought we could move all our
kids video tapes to DVDs and get rid of the VCR once and for all. Well I
just discovered that DVDs recorded on this device are in VR (video
recording?) mode.

I'm NEC 3500 AG based BusLink external DVD drive, and I can't seem to even
mount the DVD created in this mode (on a dual-layer DVD+R disk). I did a
little searching on the web and found that at least one person can play a
VR-mode disk (unfinalized at that) on his Window machine using this drive
and some software called PowerDVD. So it seems to be possible.

The question is how do I play and/or backup these disks under Linux.

Any help would be appreciated.
