Hm, I need to correct myself.

update-alternatives is a tool developped initially for the Debian 
project; however, a quick Googling shows that it's now included in 
Novell/SuSE and possibly some other distributions as well.

So calling it ``specific to Debian'' is not quite accurate anymore.
