[gnome console] Ubuntu v5.10

I'm a new user of Ubuntu Linux.
In general, I'm satisfied with the gnome desktop, with one exception.

I would like a terminal emulation window that distinguishes different
types of files by colorizing them.

I previously used KDE on Mandrake 10, which had this feature.

I've noted that the System/Preferences/ Preferred Application dialog
suggests that there are 3 styles of terminal emulator to choose from.
However, switching away from the Gnome Terminal does have an an affect.

Is there a way to get a more functional terminal emulator with Gnome?
Or will I need to switch to KDE?
If so, is there a way to get this without installing a different version
of Ubuntu?
