Please help me use Ubuntu to retrieve sata from crashed computer.

I'm no guru but i agree with k. mandle here. try a good live distro, any
one of them will let you copy files to your usb disk. I've heard and
seen that ubuntu is not so good with SATA just at the moment so you
might want to try kanopix or knoppix

Remember to stay calm and think carefully before you do anything.
