These timings are ridiculously high... grub-to-gdm takes around 40s here
(Pentium M 1.6 ghz), gdm-to-desktop takes less than 10 seconds (much
longer if I fill my panel with stuff like tomboy, but that's expected)

Firefox: 4s (this may be due to being hot in the cache)
oowriter: 15s
g-t: 1.5s + an additional 1 for bash-completion to complete
gedit: around 4
