You'll want to use RDP if your friend has enabled the Remote Desktop 
feature (AFAIK only available in Professional, not Home).  I'm not sure 
what Remote Assistance uses and whether or not its supported.

Alternatively, you could have your friend install a VNC server for 
Windows (TightVNC and RealVNC come to mind).
