is there a good alternative to totem?

I too like vlc a lot, but it doesn't seem to be able to handel
external subtitle files (.srt). Neither does gxine. Both mplayer and
xine /do/, on the other hand. However, for some reason, on my laptop,
mplayer won't scale video larger than the native size (not under gnome
at least; kde yes), so I usually end up watching divxs with xine,
despite its hokey interface, and qt and wmp media with vlc.
