a reboot wasn't necessary...

just two simple commands and the network would have been properly restarted 
for you:

ifdown eth0

followed by

ifup eth0

note, those commands have to be given by someone with root privileges, so for 
a normal user, precede each one with sudo and give the password when 
prompted.
