How to directly access files on windows network

Hi there.

This is probably a really silly question but how do I directly access
files on a windows network (I'm not a windows person).

In the file browser I can navigate to a windows share and see the files
in it. If I see (say) a text file and want to open it in vi, how do I do
that?

The "Properties" for the file say it is "smb://host/file", but vi rather
predictably can't handle that :-)

Is there a trick to this, or do I have to go back to what I did
pre-Ubuntu and use smbmount?

Regards, K.
