terminal problem in ubuntu

Please some one help 
I have become proficient in most windows based aps etc.. for some time and recently picked up ubuntu to see what the os is capable of. Well if anything ok but not user friendly I'm willing to learn but I need help I cant even begin to understand how to unpack simple MOBO drivers using synaptic or apt-get... found synaptic cant find apt-get within or out of the OS... second today I feel like I have made some headway 
I installed terminal to try to command line the run pkg I downloaded for the MOBO. It told me everything went well until I tried to use it

Error message was as follows

Cannot launch entry
Details: failed to execute child process
"terminal" (no such file or directory)


Something has to give or I feel like dropping the whole idea
