Try running

glxgears -iacknowledgethatthistoolisnotabenchmark

seriously .... The developers got sick of people using it as a benchmark:
running it as above outputs fps.

As for the other questions, I haven't a clue - but I think this is one of
the funniest options/parameters in Linux...
