At one point, I got two Thinkpad T22s. One for my girlfriend, one for my
sister. This was last summer, so I put Ubuntu 5.04 on one of them,
customized it by setting up some icons on the desktop and adding a few
extra applications. When I was done, I took the Ubuntu 5.04 Live CD,
inserted it in both laptops and booted them. Once I was in the Live CD,
I installed the nbd-server and -client packages. I did a dd if=/dev/nbd
of=/dev/hda (or something like that), and copied everything over
bitwise. Once copied, I booted the newly imaged machine and twiddled the
user name and hostname and was all done.

Very fun and educational, but slow because it copied all the empty bits,
too, rather than compressing them out.

Not quite what you asked for, but I thought I'd share.
