gnome-terminal in dapper

anybody knows why in gnome-terminal every character you type, the
cursor seems to go from the beginning of the line up to the char that
you are typing?

if i ssh into a remote box it doesn't happen

I use the same (cvs controlled) version of the .inputrc, .dir_colors,
.bash*rc files in many computers. In breezy this never happened. For
some systems (running dapper) it happens and for some it doesn't.

If i remove all those files, the same thing happens. very puzzling....

I know is not gnome-terminal itself, because it would happen when i
ssh into a remote box as well.

No idea what this could be. Anybody have any ideas?
