CPU usage update-notifier

Recently I noticed that my cpu fan is heavily working although I am only
browsing the web or editing a file with gedit. Invoking top discovers
that the update-notifier uses between 20% and 40% percent of my cpu.
After I killed this process my machine behaves normally again.

By searching Google I found a bug report for Dapper that sounds quite
similar to me [1]. But I still run Breezy, not Dapper (update-notifier
0.40.15).

Has anyone noticed the same problem? Do you think this is a bug or just
a configuration problem? Is there anything I can do besides killing
processes or disabling the update-notifier?

Thanks, Jochen
