I received my pack of 10 Ubuntu 6.06 LTS CDs today and I am very happy
with them! They will be very helpful when I talk to people and want to
show them how mature Linux distributions really are. When I install
Ubuntu on a computer I preferably include a CD because it helps to
communicate the concept of a mature and ready product.
Another important function for the CD is that the great majority of
internet users outside developed countries still have very limited
bandwidth with low reliability on the connections. They certaily would
have difficulties downloading half a dozen hundreds of megabytes.
Furthermore, there might be limited access to equipment and media for
burning. This is the harsh reality for the majority of the population
in most developing/underdeveloped countries today.
Steve:
In my opinion we should not blame this type of software distribuntion
for the lack of content. Remember that very narrow and specific
installation details such as RAID are useful for very few people and
can be easily obtained by downloading the alternate install.
If you have difficulties in dowloading the images and burning CDs just
tell us that and I am am sure that many of us at the comunity will be
able to find a convenient solution for you. If you live around the
corner or a bit further away I could send you a home-burned handwritten
CD, that is not very beautiful but will most probably do the trick for
the RAID installation.
And by the way, the CDs are nice because they are Ubuntu, in the
ancient African meaning! They are free (like beer) because there is a
lot of hard work and care packed on our dear Ubuntu Linux distribution.
And of course thanks to the philanthropic heart of Mr. Shuttleworth.
