sudo apt-get install gawk linux-kernel-devel

sudo make-kpkg clean

sudo make-kpkg -initrd etc. etc. etc. (retry YOUR kernel compile
command)



Or remove the offending hardware from the kernel config (unless you
have/need it of course).
