Audio volume too low on HP dv1000 with Totem movie player

Could you try plugging in your speakers to your headphone jack in
Ubuntu? My problem came with one of the new kernels and it seemed as if
the headphone and back panel jack were switched. I currently use the
front panel for my speakers since I have plenty of slack wire but it
might not be as easy in your case.
