You need chinese font like simsun. Just copy it from Windows, spadmin it 
and  then scim-pinyin should work normally.
It would be easier if you also use chinese environment otherwise you 
need to hack your locale a little bit to use chinput/scim-pinyin in a 
non-chinese environment.
