I haven't tried it with the headphone jack. The speakers are physically
OK. I get a lot more volume when playing DVD's on the same machine
under windows.
I forgot to say that this is under 6.06
As I noted in another reply, I have the same problem with mplayer. Also
volume from other sources (the sound which is played when you log on,
for example) is lower than it should be. It sounds normal or a bit
quiet but the volume control is all the way up.
Initially I thought this was characteristic of this machine, but then
I tried sound in windows and found that I could get it much louder.
One other strange thing is that the sound which plays when gnome
starts sounds clipped. Initially I thought the speakers were
saturating, it sounds exactly like that. But its not because you can
get much louder sounds under windows.
Appending my demsg output in case it helps.
