Audio volume too low on HP dv1000 with Totem movie player

This system dual boots windows and ubuntu. In windows I can play DVD's
with acceptable volume. In ubuntu I get very low volume, almost too low
to hear. Other sounds play at a listenable level, but its not fantastic.
I am not sure whether this is a general sound problem, or a problem
with totem.
I have googled for similar problem reports and I have searched the
ubuntu wikis. I can't find any record of other people having the same
problem.
I have looked through the /etc tree and the gnome config files in my
user account but I can't find anything which obviously lets me increase
the volume. Needless to say the gnome volume control and the totem
volume control are both set to maximum.
Can anybody make a suggestion about this?
Thanks.
